The short version

Ghana Heritage Quest is built to be private by design. It works without an account, and the heart of your journey — your nickname, day-name, collected stamps and streaks — lives on your own device, not on our servers. We don't sell your data and we don't use advertising trackers.

What stays on your device

The following is stored locally in your browser (via localStorage) and never leaves your device unless you choose to export a backup:

  • Your chosen nickname, Ghanaian day-name and tradition.
  • The heritage sites you've stamped, your streaks and milestones.
  • Preferences such as your light/dark theme.

Clearing your browser data or tapping Reset progress erases this immediately and permanently.

What reaches our servers

When you tap Check in at a site, your device sends your current GPS coordinates to our server so we can confirm you're genuinely within range. We use them only to calculate that distance and do not retain them — we keep just a record that your device earned the stamp (a random device identifier plus the site), which powers quests and leaderboards. None of this is linked to your name or email.

To keep the app reliable and understand which screens get used, we also record basic, non-identifying usage events — the page you're viewing and brief "still active" pings — tied to that same random device identifier.

If you choose to create an account (for example, to back up across devices), our backend provider stores the email address you supply solely to sign you in and let you reset your password.

Location

Location is only ever requested when you tap to use it. For features like sorting nearby places or nearby-site alerts, your coordinates are used entirely on your device and never leave it. When you use GPS check-in to earn a stamp, your coordinates are sent to our server once to verify you're within range — used only for that distance check and not retained afterwards. You can decline or revoke location access at any time in your browser or device settings.

Notifications

If you turn on notifications (for example, streak or nearby-site reminders), your browser or device provides a push token that we store so we can deliver them. We use it solely to send you those notifications, and you can turn them off at any time in the app or your device settings.

Cookies & analytics

We don't use advertising cookies, third-party ad trackers, or sell your information. The only analytics we run are our own first-party usage counts described above — anonymous page views and activity pings tied to a random device identifier, used solely to improve the app. Our hosting and backend providers may also process minimal technical data (such as a request's IP address) purely to operate and secure the service.

Third parties

Map links open in Google Maps, and account/backend services are provided by our infrastructure partners (including Supabase). Those services handle the data you send them under their own privacy terms.

Your controls

  • Export / restore your passport from the Profile page at any time.
  • Reset progress to wipe all on-device data.
  • To delete any account data, email us and we'll action it.

Children

Ghana Heritage Quest is a general-audience travel app and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

We may update this policy as the app evolves. We'll revise the "last updated" date above when we do.
